The 9 Thoughts You’ll Definitely Have In Your First Fitness Class

Some people like to exercise alone, and some like to work out in groups. So, you’ve decided to set yourself some goals, and you don’t think you’ll enjoy a sweat session on your own, which is why you’re looking up different fitness classes your gym offers. 

Now, all exercise sessions work, but you won’t necessarily feel comfortable joining a fitness class the first time you go, but don’t give up, everyone has these 9 thoughts:

1 “I’ll be better off at the back of the room, so people can’t see me.” 

You think you’re doing good by heading to the back of the room, but you’re holding yourself back by being there. So, get to the front, so what if you don’t do the moves right? You’ll feel worse trying to do something you have no idea how to do because you couldn’t see the instructor. 

If you’re going with a friend, you’ll need to space yourselves out, don’t sit next to another newbie, so you can pick up on what the experienced fitness class-goers are doing. 

2 “Yup, the fit club is at the front of the class.” 

It doesn’t matter where you go; there will always be some sort of clique. The mall, the gym, a cycling club, a runner’s club, or even the PTA. It’s just the way things go. But, don’t let a clique discourage you from reaching your health goal.

3 “I didn’t bring the right gear, and now I look like a moron.” 

No, don’t think that. First off, we all make mistakes, so what?! 

But, for future reference, ask the studio or gym if you need any special gear to avoid going through the embarrassment. But, you’ll need to pick up whether it’s a sales ploy or not. If they suggest you buy training gloves, that isn’t a sales pitch, but if they tell you to buy a pair of spandex shorts with the studio or gym logo, you’ll know they just want your money. 

Oh, always wear what makes you feel strong and confident, you’ll push yourself without even realizing it.

4 “Umm. This instructor is scary.”

Okay, a trainer needs to sport muscle and a big attitude, it’s just part of the job requirement. But, don’t ever fear them, it’s often the ones who “scare” their class who are the ones who get their class seeing the results they want.

If you’re really that frightened though, go speak to the instructor, you’ll see that s/he is human and is only trying to help you as much as possible. 

5 “What on Earth is this machine?” 

Yes, gym equipment can look alien, and you might be confused about how to use them. But, if you don’t want to seem like the odd one out, get to the session earlier and ask for someone to show you how it works. 

6 “No way, that chick just grabbed 20-lb weights, am I weak?”

Okay, let’s take this back to the basics, it’s not a competition! It’s about doing what is right for your body, if you can’t lift 20-lb, then stick to the 5-lb. The chick that grabbed the heavyweights probably needs more to feel muscle burns, she’s probably been in the fit game for a while, too. So, don’t ever compare yourself to the people around you. 

7 “Oh, I’m the only one sweating. It’s only the warm-up, too. I really hate this!”

You’re putting to work muscles you probably haven’t used in a while, so don’t beat yourself up. What did you expect, not to sweat? Be proud of your sweat; it proves that you’re on your way to achieving your goals. 

8 “Oh, for goodness sake, I am so uncoordinated! I should just go.” 

Alright, we don’t want to sound mean, but NO ONE is looking at you because they’re all focused on the instructor. So, do the same, it’ll come with time. 

9 “Thank the lord; it’s over!”

Well, first of all, congratulations! But, make sure you go talk to the instructor, you might find some inspiration. And don’t give up, just because it didn’t go the way you expected, doesn’t mean it won’t work for you.
